Read our new complimentaty White Paper on "The importance of lung deposition studies during the development phase of inhalation products"

Most medication intake routes are easy to control and the drug transition into the blood circulation is hardly affected by the drug uptake procedure. That, however, totally differs when choosing inhalation as route for administration. In this case the medication needs to be delivered to the target lung region as aerosol in order to interact topical in the lungs or to pass the blood-lung barrier for a systemic effect.

This medication transportation system is difficult to control and can be influenced by external factors, what further complicates the prediction of lung deposition. In order to understand the mechanism and the efficiency of this transportation system, the amount and local distribution of the deposited drug inside of the lungs need to be measured. 2D lung deposition studies are an easy, standardized and robust measurement technique to analyze the individual lung deposition of healthy subjects as well as of patients with different lung diseases. The implementation of such a deposition study during the early development phase helps to understand and optimize the inhalation transportation route and to streamline the product development process. It further can add valuable information for the following clinical phase.

This paper points out the benefit and potential of lung deposition studies during the early inhalation product development phase.
